Engrossed In Research

During today’s lesson, another session of researching into my chosen topic awaited me, so I wasted no time being engrossed in it. Firstly I decided to look at appearance and identity. Since this is going to be an element that will hopefully be implemented into my FMP. I needed to gain more knowledge on this area. From this area I noticed that I have in fact seen this before. People wearing certain clothes to fit in, and be like their friends or other people they have seen that look cool. I highlighted another theorist there, (Flugel) who says people who think they are inferior to somebody tries to shadow the superior person so they no longer feel this way. My opinion on this is I do feel a lot of people try to shadow who perhaps get labelled as a good ‘dresser’. They might feel if they dress the same similar compliments will be thrown to them. The information was relevant to me because I need to know and understand why people do dress like they do. Is it because, if they dress how they really wanted they would receive negative comments? I guess I want to find out if they are doing it out of their own accord. This will help me with my final piece because hopefully I would to interview the people I assemble and find out from them do they see someone who perhaps they feel inferior to in terms of fashion and they’ll have to step up their game to be acknowledge.

After looking at identity and appearances I decided to look at culture, observer and wearer. I think the most important aspect of this is culture because, it is considered normal to wear certain clothes in their native countries. The information I found on this I already knew because I see people out in the street who wear custom clothes and accessories. For example: Muslim girl are known to wear saris and headscarfs. I think it is good that cultures have established clothes associated to them because it creates a sense of belonging and pride. I could probably use this information to create my possible final piece by introducing a wear in my ethical brand that will create a sense of belonging. Maybe I should fetch girls wearing headscarf and models them wearing the clothes so other Muslim girls can relate to them.

Later on I started to look at fashion within popular culture. Ethical fashion doesn’t really have a place within popular culture, because for so long mainstream has bossed things in the market. When researching this it made me realise that the mass media does have a tight grip on the way we see fashion, especially sources such as: magazines and television. I think that television produces more of a negative effect than a positive effect, because of how damaging it can be. It really targets the gullible self-obsessed image teenage girls and young women’s. They see a beautiful girl on Tv wearing a beautiful clothes and they really persuade the audience to get it. The negative aspect could be that the model of Tv is wearing a fur coat which us DIER do not believe animal fur should be utilised in any way. This information was relevant to me because now I know I need to make a positive effect when I am advertising my clothes. I could use the information to create my final piece by detailing what DIER does and what we are trying to achieve which is for a positive effect.

A fur coat advert in China using the mass media as a way to get more women buying fur coats which we do not think is acceptable

Peace
