In today’s lesson I continued to thoroughly research into topics relating for my FMP. I first started out with looking into the fashion term ‘Leaders and followers’. On my website I described what it meant and introduced some examples so my readers can fully understand what the term means. From what I gather about this topic I completely agree with it. I think in the world of fashion there are definitely juggernauts such as: athletes, movie stars and fashion models who adopt a certain style and looked upon by followers in which they have the choice to shadow the leader. Me and my friends can definitely relate to this because there are people in the fashion world we want to dress like for example: Kanye West is someone that comes to mind. If he puts out a new pair of trainers I would be tempted to purchase it not just because of how it looks but really because of the name of trainer and the fact that it was designed by Mr West.

The information is relevant to me because I need to establish strong leaders which would be the first ones to wear my brand’s clothes. When people do visit my website (mostly students at my college) and see the ethical fashion they need to see the person who is wearing and feel like this person has a good sense of fashion and actually implementing his style would be interesting. The reality is ethical fashion is not really big so the leaders I assemble have to be strong in that department.

“Fashion isn’t always practical” Kanye West

After looking at leaders and followers I moved onto explaining characteristics and influencing factors regrading fashion in Western Culture. I wanted to see exactly how we as a society ended up dressing as we do now in today’s world. In my opinion it is a very debatable topic which I am going to discuss as well on here later on. I also stated another theorist which Craik said in 1994 “Potential fashion instabilities, such as youth vs age: masculinity versus femininity; androgyny versus singularity; inclusiveness versus exclusiveness; and work versus play” Loads of big words there which be later be dissipated below.

I was very interested with fashion in Western culture so I decided to throw myself into the world of social change within fashion. I found out through the years fashion has dramatically changed in many aspects. I found out even clothes and the gear you wear for sports is considered as fashion. Furthermore, fashion has changed more for women than men because they didn’t have as much rights and authority men did a few decades ago. The biggest change has to be it is now acceptable for women to wear suits and transgender to dress as the opposite sex oppose to the sex they are born with. I agree that many things have changed and I think it is because more things are been accepted and generalised in our society as of today. It is also a good thing because many people were fighting for this for a few decades, and now these acceptances are brought into fruition.

This information was relevant to me because I can now have more knowledge on how fashion was in the past and how it can advance more. I needed to know the transition which took place, and how long over a period of time it took so this could be adopted. I will use this information for my final piece by being a bit more risky. There is no doubt in my mind that fashion can continue to evolve. I do not think for one second that this is all it can offer. Perhaps I can introduce a new wear which people do not necessarily consider to be in the norm. Enabling this successfully will make me to stand out more from my competitors and challenging those top brands whilst pulling in a respectable audience.

Timeline

I will leave you with a quote I created today.

“Fashion both looks back and conveys the specific time in history.” Sesay
